Our SCITT Training Sessions

Trainees begin teaching early in the programme, developing their practice across two school placements and through the Beginning, Developing and Extending phases.

  • In the Beginning Phase, trainees focus on core aspects of English teaching, including establishing routines, building positive relationships, and introducing reading, writing and oracy skills

  • In the Developing Phase, trainees plan and deliver lessons in areas such as creative writing, reading analysis and non-fiction texts

  • In the Extending Phase, trainees refine their practice, teaching a full timetable and preparing students for GCSE English

Teaching develops from small activities to full lessons and sequences of learning, including:

  • Analysing fiction and non-fiction texts

  • Teaching writing (creative and analytical)

  • Delivering Shakespeare, poetry and modern texts

  • Preparing pupils for GCSE assessment

Trainees also take part in focused Intensive Training and Practice (ITaP), applying key strategies such as modelling analytical writing, scaffolding extended responses, and using retrieval to support reading and recall.
