As a Chemistry teacher, you will inspire young people to investigate the substances that make up our world and the reactions that shape everyday life. Our Chemistry teacher training programme will equip you with the knowledge, confidence and classroom experience needed to engage learners, develop their scientific curiosity and help them achieve their full potential.

John Jones
John began his journey in education after completing a degree in Nutrition and Dietetics, which gave him a strong foundation in scientific thinking, evidence-based practice, and communication. He then pursued a degree in Science Education, graduating with First Class Honours.

Since entering the teaching profession, John has developed a passion for teaching and learning, particularly in helping both students and teachers achieve their potential. Alongside teaching science, he has supported and mentored trainee and early career teachers, helping them to develop their classroom practice, confidence, and professional expertise.

As Subject Lead for Science within Prestolee SCITT, John is committed to developing reflective, knowledgeable, and effective Science teachers who can inspire curiosity and a love of learning in the next generation of students.
How will I study?

Our SCITT Training Sessions
Trainees begin teaching early in the programme across two school placements.
In the Beginning Phase, trainees focus on routines, relationships and introducing core chemical concepts.
In the Developing Phase, trainees teach areas such as atomic structure, bonding, reactions and quantitative chemistry.
In the Extending Phase, trainees teach a full timetable and prepare students for GCSE Chemistry.
Teaching develops progressively, including:

Teaching atomic structure and bonding

Delivering chemical reactions and calculations

Planning practical investigations

Preparing pupils for GCSE assessment
Trainees also complete ITaP, focusing on modelling scientific thinking, addressing misconceptions and improving recall.

Entry Requirements
Honours degree at 2:2 or above, Master's qualification or PHD ideally in Chemistry or a related subject
Grade C/4 in GCSE English (or equivalent)
Grade C/4 in GCSE Maths (or equivalent)
Good subject knowledge

No school experience is required to join this course!
Finance & Funding
Our course fees for 2027-28 are set at £8790 per annum.
Tuition fee loans are available for most British students. Applicants can also apply for a maintenance loan for financal support during their study. Self-funding options also available. The Department for Education reviews bursary funding annually.
For the most recently published funding guidance, Chemistry currently attracts a high-value training bursary. However, this information will be available in October 2026 by the DfE.
