As a Biology teacher, you will inspire young people to explore the fascinating processes that sustain life, from cells and genetics to ecosystems and human health. Our Biology teacher training programme will equip you with the knowledge, confidence and classroom experience needed to engage learners, develop their scientific understanding and help them achieve their full potential.

John Jones
John began his journey in education after completing a degree in Nutrition and Dietetics, which gave him a strong foundation in scientific thinking, evidence-based practice, and communication. He then pursued a degree in Science Education, graduating with First Class Honours.

Since entering the teaching profession, John has developed a passion for teaching and learning, particularly in helping both students and teachers achieve their potential. Alongside teaching science, he has supported and mentored trainee and early career teachers, helping them to develop their classroom practice, confidence, and professional expertise.

As Subject Lead for Science within Prestolee SCITT, John is committed to developing reflective, knowledgeable, and effective Science teachers who can inspire curiosity and a love of learning in the next generation of students.
How will I study?

Our SCITT Training Sessions
Trainees begin teaching early in the programme across two placements and through the Beginning, Developing and Extending phases.
In the Beginning Phase, trainees focus on core aspects of Biology teaching, including routines, classroom relationships and introducing key biological concepts.
In the Developing Phase, trainees teach areas such as cells, ecosystems, life diversity, respiration and photosynthesis.
In the Extending Phase, trainees teach a full timetable and support students preparing for GCSE Biology.
Teaching develops from small activities to full lessons and sequences of learning, including:

Teaching cell biology and organisation

Delivering ecology and genetics content

Planning practical investigations

Preparing pupils for GCSE assessment
Trainees also participate in ITaP, applying strategies such as modelling scientific explanations, addressing misconceptions and using retrieval practice.

Entry Requirements
Honours degree at a class 3 or above ideally in Biology or a related subject
Grade C/4 in GCSE English (or equivalent)
Grade C/4 in GCSE Maths (or equivalent)
Good subject knowledge

No school experience is required to join this course!
Finance & Funding
Our course fees for 2027-28 are set at £8790 per annum.
Tuition fee loans are available for most British students. Applicants can also apply for a maintenance loan for financal support during their study. Self-funding options also available. The Department for Education reviews bursary funding annually.
Secondary Biology does not currently attract a training bursary or scholarship. However, this information will be available in October 2026 by the DfE.
